Memory failing with age - I was surprised to see Brearley, Gower and Gatting in the same X1, as I thought each had been England captain for a reasonable time and with Botham also in the same side, there can't have been too many England sides featuring 4 current or future captains.

Yeah, I thought that too. I wouldn’t immediately have associated Willis with Gower and Botham either.

Willis too per the beeb :
He captained England in 18 Tests and 29 one-day internationals

Gooch was also captain in the early 90's

And Briefly Boycott too.

Big Bob Willis - a part of my youth gone. Superb quick bowler.

I'd forgotten that Boycott was playing. So basically the entire Egland team were at some stage captains, apart from Old, Dilley, Taylor and Willey.

I sort of lost sight of cricket around the turn of the late 70s / 80s whilst I was busy being a delinquent cunt. So I completely disassociate England before and after that period.

Willis made his Test debut in ‘71 alongside Colin Cowdray, Ray Illingworth, Knott, Underwood, D’Oliveira etc.

So the idea of him then being there with the ‘new generation’ just doesn’t really compute in my head.

A particularly bad time for Leeds too , I was busy being a punk rocker at that time ( still pretty much only stuff I listen to ) ...... football had gone to shit , both with Leeds and England , sport generally in doldrums here then , with sparse success in olympics with the likes of Coe , Ovett , Thompson , you had the cold war , Falklands war , riots ..... very gloomy times so you can understand why Botham and Willis were heroes back then .

Greatest test victory in the history of English cricket and you don't associate the 2 main architects of the win??

Hmm, OK, takes all sorts I guess.

You know, I'm sick of following my dreams, man. I'm just going to ask where they're going and hook up with 'em later.
