O/T Sustainability and all that shite

Postby eric olthwaite » Tue Jul 03, 2018 1:29 pm

A minor diversion on this auspicious day. As the years go by I become more concerned about sustainability and my ‘footprint’ in various forms – and I know others have mentioned it - so I thought it may be useful to have a thread for thoughts, tips etc.

I shall use the medium of my morning coffee as an example of the difficulties of this stuff. I am addicted to coffee, can’t deny it, and my usual morning drink is a skinny flat white – skinny mainly because I think the coffee tastes better with less fat. Now, all this is problematic for starters because I read somewhere that the production of one coffee shot uses 150 litres of water if you account for irrigation, washing the beans etc, and most of this takes place in water-poor countries.

So I probably just shouldn’t drink coffee at all. But then you are helping to support developing countries and ultimately, how far do you take the sackcloth approach? By rights, the first thing you should do is ditch football what with all the resources used for travel, TV coverage, reporting etc.

Anyway, back to coffee. Acknowledging that milk has a significant global warming footprint, I thought about and tried almond milk*. It’s fine, but if you use that you’re probably adding even more water use. You can’t win. There isn't really an acceptable means of equating different sustainability issues

*Oatmilk, by the by, is just fucking awful.

Whatever, I s’pose, back to the football.

Erm, no it isn't, so you can get to fuck. It is, quite simply, the best alternative for dairy milk.

Depends on context for me. Just think it makes coffee taste like porridge whereas the nutty hint of almond seems to work.

Where are the tits on an oat?

Hazelnut milk is quite nice. I have it on muesli and sometimes in coffee (I drink coffee black, mainly).

Them bastard coffee pods should be illegal

Billions of the little plastic bastards every year.
Mirrors and copulation are abominable, since they both multiply the numbers of men.

Love oat milk and Oatly from Sweden is in a class of its own, the rest are just ship copies. Wouldn't put it in tea again, bloody awful, havent tried their Oatly for coffee either because I drink my coffee black, but its ace on cereals, Museli, porriage and the like.

Agree with this n'all. Must be one of the most wasteful inventions of the past decade. Have trendy vegetarian green party voting hipster twats at work who order hundreds of the fucking things on line. Silly cunts

Aye. I have a Dolce Gusto machine and it pisses me off a little that you can't recycle the plastic.

Next investment will be a bean to cup machine.

Can't believe people were conned into this little scam.
I'm not a way out green, we recycle a fair bit but could do so much more.
But these coffee pods... Fuckin hell, how did they get away with it?

It's a fucker. As Ive got older I try to recycle wherever possible but these little fuckers are just wrong. They will be banned at some point if they stay as non recylcable, surely.

I recycle as much as I can, and I also as far as is possible buy stuff where the packaging is recyclable. However, the amount of packaging that has the 'not currently recyclable' message is a disgrace.

I have just been to Asda for a few bits and they had no loose oranges of bunches of bananas so I had to get a netted bag of oranges and a bunch of nanas in a plastic bag - guess what - 'not currently recyclable'

Seriously mate, don't. We have them at my work and there constantly broken or in clean mode. Cleaning routines are a cunt, get an aeropress. Twenty quid or so. Clean in seconds. Does whatever style you want, really. Only waste goes on the compost.

See also almond ‘milk’.

Or nut juice, as it’s more accurately called.
I like it. What is it?

Oh, that.

I can provide nut juice if anyone's after it, then. Bit lumpy.

On the pods though, Nespresso recycle 100% of the pods if you drop them back into a shop.

And Eric - the best thing you can possible do for sustainability if you’re worried about water/nutrients usage over anything else is to cut out meat as much as possible. The redder (and tastier) it is, the worse it is for the environment.

I’m gonna start going ‘less-meat’ in a couple of months once the wife is done breast feeding, I.e. don’t just go for it with every meal but have it as a treat instead.

Just checked further and if you empty the pods, dolce gusto ones can go in the household plastic recycling.
