you missed the deadline. i'd already made my bit of the draw & sent to phil. I'll re-do it now, as a special favour.

definitely closed now, especially since we have our 16, cheers.

This fucker is nailed on to win

the flying pig wrote:ok, looking good. as per the OP i'll keep allowing entries until midday.

As promised, I've devised a needlessly labor intensive & drama-laden process for making the draw.

what i reckon i'll do is email Phil, in Excel, sometime before the Russia game kicks off:

(a) a password protected list of the entrants, randomly ordered by me & pasted as valyes; and
(b) a non-password protected [randomly generated] list of the teams & players. i'll ask him to run the randomiser a couple of times & then email it back to me, pasted as values.

when i've got his list of teams & players back i'll put it side by side with my list of entrants, giving us a matched list of entrants & teams/players, which i'll publish on the site.

if anyone wants to challenge the integrity of the process i'll give phil a password to open the list i sent to him at (a) & verify that its ordering is the same as the one that i published on the site.

i'm not sure when phil will be able to send me his list, e.g. he might be tied up tomorrow, in fact i'm quite tied up with work PM, but entrants can rest assured that the randomising will have happened long before kickoff even if the results are published potentially a few hours, or even i suppose a day or whatever, after :thumbl: .

Piggy. You could have just picked bits of paper out of a hat with someone watching you.

Ok, I'll use that method for your picks, my cat is watching me as we speak.

...

You got Panama & Saudi for winning team & Iran's #2 and #3 goalkeepers in the top scorer sweep.

i'll post the draw's results sometime tomorrow, once phil & i have got our stuff together. 16 players in the end so some lucky fucker has indeed drawn saudi arabia, who at halftime look like they're already halfway to the plane home... but, thanks to my competition's patented 'great leveller' mechanism, as noted earlier they come as a pair with brazil, which isn't a bad consolation.

thanks to their improbably high rating with the bookmakers, mother russia come as a pair with everyone's favourite plucky underdog, iceland.

ok, so here's the draw.

hard to say who's got the best picks. fred flintstone i guess, 2nd favourite team & 3rd favourite top scorer... but eggs very much in the kraut basket. can't say i like my picks all that much. charlie's spain/lukaku pairing looks good. metalsmurf's a bit ropy.

hopefully the top scorer pool keeps things interesting for a bit longer since that's such an open competition, really anyone on the list, with the notable exception of raheem sterling, has roughly a modest chance of winning.

i'd like to say the prize pool was £160, but it's actually £159.26 after sunshine whites somehow managed to transfer his cash using a ridiculously cack-handed method that seemingly incurred a 74 pence penalty. being a generous sort i'll still pay out £80 to the winner of each competition [winning team, top scorer] but might have to have a word with sunshine about payment methods if he somehow triumphs [not a lost cause i guess with argentina].

Teams

the flying pig - Switzerland; Peru
Quiffy - Croatia; Nigeria
SimonB - Portugal; Japan
Fred Flintstone - Germany; Iran

Quiffy - Gabriel Jesus; Christian Eriksen
SimonB - Lionel Messi; David Silva
Fred Flintstone - Timo Werner; Paulo Dybala
AndyPaul - Thomas Muller; Roberto Firmino
sunshine whites - Edinson Cavani; Marco Reus
Charlie don't surf - Romelu Lukaku; Mohamed Salah
Phil - Harry Kane; Rodrigo
Portadown White - Sergio Aguero; Radamel Falcao

simon's portugal/messi is one of the best. an above average team pick & a first rate scorer pick.

Urgh, not great, though I suppose Giroud has a chance of making hay in the group stages

pretty pleased with myself over this one, tbh, i've done a cracking job of organising :dj:.

i'll upgrade that 'pretty pleased' to 'delighted' if neymar [overrated/outside bet imo but apparently a few stray idiots' idea of favourite to be leading scorer] picks up a nasty crocking sometime very soon.

I'm not really sure what to do about that omission.

A more or less fair resolution imo would be to offer for sale one final sweepstake place, £10 as before, increasing the top scorer prize pool to £90, and for your £10 you don't get any teams but for top scorer you get neymar plus this guy who scored two for Russia today, Denis Cheryshev. Roughly a fair price given their odds (neymar's the favorite and the other guy a reasonable shout since 5 or 6 is pretty much always enough to win the golden boot & he has 2 already) takers?

Can’t complain at Brazil! Saudi I might struggle with. Muller and Firmino as top scorers are interesting picks!
