World cup 2018 sweepstake

Postby the flying pig » Wed Jun 13, 2018 9:11 am

Better late then never, right?

I've finally got round to organising a WC 2018 sweepstake.

It's £10 for entry, of which half will be put into a 'top scoring player' pool and half into 'winning team' pool. Winner takes all in both cases, no charity donations, prizes for second place, etc.

Given the late hour I anticipate far fewer than 32 entries, meaning that I'll allocate multiple teams (as many as i can) to each entrant [e.g. if we have 11 players i'll allocate everybody one team from the 1st-11th ranked sides, then a second team from the 12-22nd ranked teams, the bottom 10 teams going unallocated]. If one of the bottom 10 teams gets the cup, I'll give the winning team prize to the tournament runners up [or third or fourth place etc]. if unallocated teams make up **all four** semifinalists then the entire winning team prize pool will be donated to cancer research.

In terms of top scorer I'll do something similar, depending on how many entrants we get, e.g. If 11 entrants I'll pick from the bookies' 22 most fancied players (bet 365, odds as of 8pm tonight). In the event of two players finishing level on most goals scored I'll go with whatever ridiculous tie breaker technique uses to allocate the golden boot (e.g. Number of assists, number of bookings, penile length, etc). In the event of un-allocated player top scoring I'll award the prize to the top scoring allocated player (sharing the prize in the event of a draw).

Places allocated to anyone who sends me £10 by midday [Leeds time] tomorrow. Paypal, TFPpublic@gmail.com. *please* include your forum moniker as a reference. I'll make the draw before kickoff in the Russia game, using some no doubt ridiculous method that will be audited for fairness by Phil.

Cheers.

good, well, that's 4 entries. my instinct is that 10+ or so would be plenty for an interesting competition. it's tbh more interesting when people have a couple of teams & players to 'root' for [e.g. just drawing out say panama kind of ends your interest in the tourney before it's even kicked off], i'd say that 16 might in fact be the optimal number, though probably asking a lot at this notice.

16 seems a good target. As I said on the other thread, I'm personally not too worried if I don't know my team(s) until the end of the first round of games, even if I get a team who's just lost their opener 8-0.

what does anyone think about an automatic 'leveller' mechanism for the second pot of teams, whereby say if you randomly draw the 16th best team from pot one you automatically get the best team from pot two, so that no-one ends up with say the 16th and 32nd best teams... the worst you can do is 16th & 17th best, might maintain a bit more interest??

Yeah, quite like that.

Seeing as I ended up with Denmark & Egypt in the work one, yes.

ok good so, what's that, so far 8 teams, not bad going in the time tbh.

i've decided to cap the number of top scorer entrants at 32, to match the number of team entrants, even though it's not inconceivable that jamie vardy some obscure guy from outside those lists will ultimately triumph.

teams:

1 Brazil
2 Germany
3 Spain
4 France
5 Argentina
6 Belgium
7 England
8 Portugal
9 Uruguay
10 Croatia
11 Colombia
12 Russia
13 Poland
14 Denmark
15 Switzerland
16 Mexico
17 Serbia
18 Peru
19 Senegal
20 Sweden
21 Iceland
22 Egypt
23 Nigeria
24 Morocco
25 Japan
26 South Korea
27 Australia
28 Costa Rica
29 Tunisia
30 Panama
31 Iran
32 Saudi Arabia

players

1 Lionel Messi
2 Antoine Griezmann
3 Timo Werner
4 Gabriel Jesus
5 Harry Kane
6 Romelu Lukaku
7 Cristiano Ronaldo
8 Edinson Cavani
9 Luis Suarez
10 Diego Costa
11 Robert Lewandowski
12 Thomas Muller
13 Kylian Mbappe
14 Sergio Aguero
15 Eden Hazard
16 Gonzalo Higuain
17 Isco
18 Olivier Giroud
19 Radamel Falcao
20 Philippe Coutinho
21 Roberto Firmino
22 James Rodriguez
23 Dries Mertens
24 Iago Aspas
25 Marco Reus
26 Mario Mandzukic
27 Mohamed Salah
28 Rodrigo
29 Christian Eriksen
30 Paulo Dybala
31 Raheem Sterling
32 David Silva
