Yeah, there are different categories, as with the women's shorter distance athletics world records:

Marita Koch (400m, 1985) - almost entirely feminine appearance, no noticeable improvement in mid to late career, you only really know her record is bent because: 1) it's inhumanly fast; and 2) she competed for the GDR.



Flo Jo (100m, 200m, 1988) - open and shut case, from the startling late career improvement in times (accompanied by deepening of voice, thickening of jawline, etc) to the untimely demise, couldn't be clearer.
