Now Qatar is officially a winter tournament, what are we expecting the football league to do? Start in July and playoffs in June? Play through it in league one and two? Scrap the league cup that year? Midweek games every week? Resume after the group stage when most players are out?

Going to be interesting at the very least!

Sure I have read that the two seasons before will be gradually shifted back. It will actually be interesting to see a world cup where the majority of the players are in peak condition.

Don't think anything will be scrapped but wouldn't be surprised to see that year semi finals go to neutral venues and stay that way. Extra time has already gone too.

The Swedish League is Spring - Autumn and ususlly has a summer break in July. This year their break started earlier and continued for longer, which meant they played two games a week at the start of the season. The lower leagues continued as normal throughout the WC.

Most European Leagues have a winter break anyway, so they will probably just make those longer. EPL the same now they have a winter break. A long break definitely changes the dynamics of the league, a lot of Swedish clubs lose their best players to European clubs over the summer. Expect the championship will fall into line and introduce a winter break in Jan at some point. Perhaps this will be the trigger.

Winter break for all the major leagues.
Most have a short one anyway. Just extend it, leagues and in July. No world cup in the summer so the top players have a nice long holiday.
Works fine.

Qatar starts mid November and ends December 18th, Qatar’s National Day. They’ll only have 8 stadiums which should be a tad challenging to fit in 62 games in 4 weeks, pitches needing a rest between games as they do.

That is fairly tight planning which could easily go tits up if they have heavy rain or snow.
The only thing we knew for sure about Henry Porter was that his name wasn't Henry Porter.

Except I’m now back in the UK. You’re welcome to Qatar and its highlights.

I suspect there might a deal with their neighbours if they can overcome their present difficulties to share some of the games. That’s an extremely optimistic view however.

Their major difficulty will be to have enough stadium trained staff to run each game. 3 or 4 games a day with no experience of running such a major event is going to be a challenge, one of many.

They’ll have a contingency plan for snow I’m sure.

No boozing in public as of today and that includes stadiums. The only place that is registered to sell booze is a hotel and anything attached to its infrastructure, so a hotel in a large building might have two or more bars. Currently there are no other places, well one or two that are sort of tolerated and under the watchful eye of the authorities, in which you can drink. There’s a big debate to be had with Budweiser, who’s a massive main sponsor, about booze in the stadiums.

I was about to bring this up, although it it shit beer, FIFA must make an absolute fortune from Bud - they will not want to miss out on the cash but will the Arabs first of all allow the promotion of alcohol, and secondly let it be consumed?

Either way, FIFA will not be out of pocket, they will make up the shortfall by shafting others.

Oh, absolutely, but can't see where else they could realistically shorten the tournament to fit the planned dates. Can't really do too much from the QF onwards and expect teams to perform, both semis on the same day maybe but FIFA will want them primetime on consecutive days.

They won’t shorten the tournament but might share some of the group games in say KSA and the UAE, but as they’re currently not on good terms I don’t see how that might happen especially as KSA are planning to build a canal between themselves and Qatar so that the peninsula is made into an island!

That argument does not hold up for me. At no matter what time a match is on, it is primetime somewhere on the planet.

Bud are not currently a signed up sponsor for 2022. There’s some talk about creating fan zones (and tented accommodation) in out of town areas so maybe they’ll allow booze there. It will be fucking soulless as there very little else to do in Qatar so the cooping up of fans in a booze allowed area will only lead to to trouble. I can’t see them mixing fans of different nationalities either.

All in all it was a splendid decision to award them the tournament.

I would argue their ideal slot is one which works for Europe without being too early for the Americas, in terms of commercial opportunities. I guess tomorrow's 4pm kick off is about right for that?
