Word up!

Postby Mustafaster » Mon Sep 26, 2011 9:17 pm

Everything you do, what makes you what you are, the thing that defines you as a human, the very thing you are doing right now, since you were born, five minutes ago and for the rest of your life...
Language.
The very wonderful BBC are putting out a fabulous series fronted by Steven Fry, Planet Word.
It is fuckin ace. You might not be Fry's greatest fan, I'm not, but he's pulled off a blinder here.
I know I'm a pain in the arse about language, but there's reason for it. Language makes us human. Without language we are third rate chimps.
Everywhere you turn, everywhere you look, everything you touch ... the planet has been transformed by humans, and the thing that has made it possible is Language.
Fry has done a great thing here, he's made linguistics approachable, a massive achievement.
Don't miss it.
Now fuck off!

Telegraph wrote:In the end, then, the only real mystery that last night’s episode came close to solving was the one about how Stephen Fry is able to make so many documentaries. The answer, it’s beginning to seem, is by not doing them properly - or at least, not half as well as he could. The great documentary series of the past famously took their authors years to think about, write and film. In Fry’s case, they’re squeezed in among all those travel programmes, science programmes, list programmes, QI episodes, books, stage appearances, screen roles, blogs and tweets. Even for the Biggest Brain in Britain™, I’m afraid, this can’t help but show.

It's already started :study:

Sounds like a TV version of Fry's English Delight, which he's done several series of on Radio 4. Some of the radio eps were pretty interesting. I don't know if you can find any of them to download somewhere but worth a listen if you like that sort of thing.

Nah, he doesn't touch English much. It's more a general overview of Language and its myriad manifestations.
It's all a bit folksy and tweedy at times, lots of crap walking/talking to camera shots which I bloody hate, there 's just summat about him I find off putting, dunno what it is, because I agree with almost everything he says. But, having said that, he interviews a lot of top specialist in the field, it's bang up to date, he knows his stuff pretty well, and he does a decent enough job of introducing the wonders of language to a lay audience.
Jacob Bronowski he ain't though. :fish:

Stephen Fry - we should all feel sorry for him. He's so poor he has to do countless adverts for car insurance, tea, etc etc. Ubiquitous smarmy twat. Sells car insurance and then pontificates about political causes. Just a media whore. Fucking hate him and all he stands for.All those fucking "comedians" selling car insurance. Once you sell some shit on T.V you lose all credibility as an "artist". The word "cunt " twas made for him versooth.
For every step, the footprint was already there.

To be fair, if I was on TV I would milk it for all the money it's worth too. 100k for an advert - yes please.

People may not like the cunt, not saying I particularly do either but can't slag him off for earning himself as much money as possible. I would do it and would say most people would.

I used to think he was quite good as a comedian, gentle stuff but OK. Never minded him at all. Now can't fucking stand him; pretentious twat. He's never 'off' is he? Can we chain him to Giles Brandreth and drop them both off a ferry, weighted down with unsold iPads? They can compare interminable anecdotes on the favoured upholstery of 13C Lithuanian kings as they sink.

And as for his writing :shake1: :puker:
You know, I'm sick of following my dreams, man. I'm just going to ask where they're going and hook up with 'em later.

I like Stephen Fry.
Not in a man love way though.
QI is one of my favourite shows.

Fry's English Delight was more about language in general rather than just English. I guess they just like the title pun too much :joker2:

Fry only really annoys me on QI, when he seems to pretend that he knows everything rather than reading it off a card. Then again, I seem to remember seeing one where Davies presented & Fry answered once and he did pretty well...

Oh, and the latter-day Oscar Wilde thing is a load of shit too.
