BBC involved in Goal of Season betting sting!

TOP GOAL BETTING SUSPENDED

The BBC's Match of the Day 'goal of the season' competition has been caught up in an alleged betting coup.

Bookmaker Blue Square announced it had closed its market after noticing suspicious behaviour.

The competition sees 10 of the season's best goals judged by a panel of the Match of the Day team, including Gary Lineker, Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson.

Viewers try to second-guess the experts, and bookmakers Blue Square have been taking bets on the winning goal since Friday.

Blue Square took £12,500 before deciding to suspend betting on Tuesday, but most of the cash - £10,000 - was staked in just four hours on Emmanuel Adebayor's goal against Spurs at White Hart Lane.

Blue Square would normally expect to take around £5,000 in a week on such a market.

Suspicions were also aroused when it discovered a flood of internet accounts had been opened for the purposes of betting on goal of the season.

Adebayor's strike had been 9/2 third favourite to win - Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo being the favourite - but those odds plummeted to 1/5 after 400 bets were placed on him on Tuesday.

The BBC is said to be taking the concerns very seriously.

A spokeswoman said: "We are talking to Blue Square and if there's enough evidence we will investigate.''

A Blue Square spokesman said there was no suggestion anyone at Match of the Day was involved.

He said: "We are not suggesting that there's anything untoward at the BBC but this kind of level of business suggests that there has been a leak."

Maybe Mr Nice Guy Lineker isn't so saintly after all?
