The apocalyptic fires raging in NSW and across vast swathes of Australia seems to have crystallised the debate around climate change. Could/should be a genuine tipping point. Let's see if the Adani mine project still goes ahead despite all the evidence of a continent on fire.If it does then it proves we really have learnt nothing.

I know lots on here think he's a cunt, but I can't help but wonder if Vampire has been hit by these horrendous fires down under.

Hope he's ok.

Aye, same thought has crossed my mind too. Hope his wine cellar is properly temperature controlled... actually, he could hide in there for a bit, at least until the shelves are empty.

Yeah, I'd wondered about him and a few other folks over Xmas (others are untouched as yet). Fucking mess, and shithouse politicians there of course, as here.

Whether anybody living there is alright or not seems like a very sliding scale. Lot of shit in the air.

All the best to all of them, even that cunt.
You know, I'm sick of following my dreams, man. I'm just going to ask where they're going and hook up with 'em later.

Beautiful. I take this to mean a reasonable degree of suffering but possibly no life-changing injuries.

Wife has (not-close) cousins who might well be near the thick of it. MIL has been in touch and they’re all, ‘Nah, we’re fine’ but hard to say whether that’s genuine, total denial or just bullshit to stop her worrying.

Vamps posted a couple of weeks ago saying he'd been quiet due to illness, made a few posted after that but has gone quiet again now. His posta are always interesting, agree, hope everything is okay down there.

Aussies seem to be taking it in their stide, less prone to drama than the UK public often are these days. Those I've spoken to have just say its something they have learnt to live with, even if this years fires are earlier and worse than normal.

We’re fine - but thanks for the good wishes. Still reading the match reports and wishing ballers a happy promotion new year.

The main issue where we are has been air quality. Clear blue skies with the big yellow disc sometimes giving way to cloudy skies and orange haze. But it’s the invisible PM2.5 particles you worry about - PM2.5 readings in Sydney have been up to 40 times that from smoking a cigarette.

So, spending more time indoors where the air con filters provide cleaner air. But at the SCG today to watch the New Year Test - it’ll take more than a bit of air pollution to keep me from that.

Hopefully it’ll clear up here soon - the fire season moves southwards through the Summer so thoughts very much with those in Southern NSW and Victoria who may have the worst ahead of them.

This vid of the magpie is very apposite though!

Good to hear you’re ok, if surprised the cricket continues. ScoMo really doesn’t get this climate thing, does he?

He’s in hock to a hard line faction in his own party who brought down the previous (much better) PM on the same issue. They seem to wield a power not unlike that of the Eurosceptics in the UK Conservative Party - and we saw where pandering to them got Cameron and May!

It’ll be interesting to see how it all shakes out when the dust settles on this Summer. Matt Keane’s comments a few weeks ago are encouraging. He’s a State Government Minister not a Federal Government Minister so doesn’t answer to ScoMo - but same Party so we’ll see.

If you think you can convince a judge you’re an ‘ethical vegan’ you may now qualify to bring an harassment claim against piss taking colleagues

At least he's not a humungous hypocrite, and is consistent in his beliefs. I assume he avoids all medical treatment, etc and so Juan Carlosly on.

That article asks : So, for example, could a worker on a supermarket checkout refuse to put a meat product through the till?
Are we really going to have different checkouts because some teenager decides she doesn't want to eat veal?
A better question - could an employer stipulate that handling meat products is a mandatory requirement for hiring to a checkout position. Or perhaps they would state it as handling all products sold by the store.

The judge hasn't actually ruled on his dismissal yet, but surely its perfectly okay for veganism to be defined as a "philosophical belief"? I don't understand why anyone would disagree with that. Equally I think it is only fair that a person should be obliged to disclose beliefs that may prevent them from doing a job when they apply. We have a case on Sweden where a midwife could not get work because her beliefs meant she could not carry out abortions, she took the case to court, sponsored by a US conservative Christian fund. She lost in all courts in Sweden because the courts decided her rights were not infringed, and they've taken the case to the European courts. Hopefully she will lose there as well. Its fine having beliefs, but don't apply for jobs if you can't do them. No idea why this guy was fired, doesn't sound like it was because of his veganism though
