Technical Gubbins / Site Update

Postby moscowhite » Fri Dec 06, 2019 10:42 am

I don’t mean to be unsympathetic, but it’s working absolutely fine for me. Orange boxes in the right place, election spam tweets all causing the required disappointment when I click to read new posts.

It might be a problem with the browsers you’re using? Could you try clearing the cache? I’ll try logging in on different browsers later to see if I can spot any shitness I’m missing.

I'm not having that problem but it still doesn't want to update the orange boxes without me refreshing the page. Worth noting this "feature" is consistent across phone and PC.

Initially I thought it had something to do with my phone deciding to download the page when it could die to some recent lack of signal problems, it might be that and just going back to the cached version but odd that the PC does the same.

I read your post on Tapatalk. If no posts load, as sometimes happens, I swipe down to refresh. Always seems to do the trick.

Here's what I'm seeing on Firefox and Opera on a Mac:

Login Screen --> put in username and password

Logs in, goes to board index

Click on The Square Ball forum

Goes to The Square Ball forum, but I'm logged out

Is that what you're all getting?

If I hit refresh, it reloads the forum, but now I'm magically logged in. So that seems to be the way around it.

My best guess, and knowing what Dan has been fiddling with, is that some sort of over-eager caching is to blame. I'll ask Dan to check this.

On the orange squares, they're still all good for me. I'm using the light blue theme because I'm a horrible perversion of nature, but I switched to the correct black theme when this was mentioned yesterday and they seemed to be in place too. Are we talking mainly desktop or mobile, or both? Are there placeholders where the squares should be? (Screenshots might be useful if anyone can be arsed.)

I think the boxes are a "feature" of the same making as the login thing. It's basically remembering the logged out/unread state until you force a refresh. I'm equally impacted from phone and PC but in both cases I'm using Chrome and the same google account (shared history and whatnot).

EDIT: I've just discovered ProSilver special edition. Having tried every theme I have no idea how people cope with the black on a widescreen monitor, it insists on only using the middle 3rd of the screen. Anyway, now I've faffed about with that every screen can render with any profile until I hit refresh (assuming its a page I tested so mostly home and settings).

I've been experiencing all the problems mentioned - chrome and mobile. Maybe if the forum was updated from 2009 to this decade the issues might be resolved?

Just a thought.

on pc only Chrome
the orange boxes have not always refreshed on returning to the index page
now they never do
i think they did when you followed the Return to link at the bottom of the page - it refreshed the index list
if you use the browser back button then it never did - so you had to refresh the page yourself
now the Return to link is like this

Just noticed the board clock is wrong. Could that be part of the issue?

Edit I posted this at 3.57pm real time but it shows up as 4.01pm

Hola. Dan adjusted the caching thing and was confident it'd do the job — has the logging out thing been solved for you all?

What about orange squares, are we good? I wasn't sure if that would be fixed by the above or if it's something else.

Maybe if the forum was updated from 2009 to this decade the issues might be resolved?

A good point well made. Although after the fuckover we had with the main website over the last fortnight I never want to touch a backend again.

I'm in touch with Gaz, who has set up monitoring alerts so if there are any problems with this place he can nip in and fix things. I'll keep this in mind because while the forum has seemed stable for quite a while it does need updating. We just need to be careful, unless you really want me to just get Dan to fucking do it?
