Jesus. Gone so young.

not sure if this belongs in here or AIBAC.

my wife is obsessed with foreign holidays. doesn't, that i've noticed, certainly post children, enjoy them particularly, especially the agonizing over prices & dates, planning, packing, flight and transits, need to 'make the most of the time' [i.e. insist on cramming in so much pointless activity as to ruin things for everyone] when you're out there, the excessive sun [we're all pasty fuckers], etc etc etc. but feels very seriously hard done by if she doesn't get at least one or preferably two per year. if nothing else i suppose it's something to boast about at the schoolgates, right?

we've got something booked for mid-late august. ibiza, 9 days. midmarket all-inclusive resort hotel. we this week sort of got kicked off our original holiday [making us eligible for a refund] due to flights changing but have the chance to book almost the same thing, same dates, only slightly cheaper.

i'm sort of mulling over the covid angle [y'know, taxi/train, customs, flight, customs, transfer, hotel room, then rinse and repeat a daily routine invlolving large communal restaurant/poolside/bars/kids club/etc] and it doesn't overly strike me as a good idea for us to be going at all if a refund is in the offing. but there'll be WW3 if i put my foot down on this. i'm wondering what the 'average person' would be thinking/doing in this scenario?

Perhaps you could do a deal based on "the science", e.g. when the government believes it is sufficiently safe to allow large gatherings outside, say at a football match, you can assume it is sufficiently safe to endure the communal dining etc indoors, in a country which I believe from Newsnight will be on the amber list. Personally I won't be venturing near the pub for a good while yet, let alone go through the hassle of foreign holidays.

We've postponed our August holiday until next August. Even if it did go ahead the though of the airport, flight etc etc in the current climate made us want to not bother. Like your good lady, my other half is pretty obsessed with jetting off at least once a year but she agreed it was better to write it off this year.
We got an offer to amend ours foc before any cancellation and refund came around so jumped at it as we were concerned they might not cancel it and we would have to actually go on it.

Looking at your situation, I would risk WW3 as the fucking earache you will get when it proves to be a thoroughly stressful and miserable experience in the airport, on the flight etc with kids, would be worse.

You're fucked!

Either have the barney about not going now, or get an earful in Ibiza/when you get back for completely ruining the holiday for everyone beacuse you were so anxious about getting Corona virus all the time you wouldn't relax.

I could have been in the same situation, but we always book last minute because my wife is self employed and worried about missing an opportunity. I've been laying the groundwork about no foreign holidays in 2020 and probably self catering in France in 21 since March.

Just to make you less anxious, this probably applies to foreign holidays:

All inclusive buffet in a global viral pandemic.

Erm, no thanks. Week in a cottage somewhere? Sounds great.

We got a full refund back on ours, she wanted to book for early September, I didnt say a word, but did mention it to one of her sisters, told sister we were taking a risk by going that early. Sister duly agreed with me and before the door had closed she was on the phone to wife giving her the stupid cunts down the phone. Walked into my house and wife says it's probably not a good idea to go so early and just make do with a self catering in the North coast late August. Sorted!

that must be right.

what are the options:

1) pull the plug, get blamed for ruining summer/the whole year;
2) we go there, it's shit and/or we catch/transmit covid or, likelier, are made to be aware of the stupidity of our going by getting snide remarks at the schoolgate/reading grim stories about what by then will surely be spiralling death tolls, get blamed for not pulling the plug or, more realistically, for not thinking of an alternative way to spend the time that's both cogniscant of the current landscape and isn't just hanging round the house;
3) we go there & it all works out perfectly.

is 3) likely or even possible?

maybe there's something in that... get her to canvass opinions amongst people who she considers to be worthwhile opinion formers... make sure her survey sample is representative somehow [e.g. not restricting it to say the idiot spendthrift who lives at number 56 + her own fuckwit mother who in 40+ years hasn't yet stumped up the courage to tell her darling daughter she's in the wrong about something]

Could there be any mileage in promising a more lavish holiday next year by adding the the refund to next year's pot?

If there’s genuinely going to be a massive fallout over a holiday and to somewhere like Ibiza.....then just divorce her.

Just pathetic.

If you dont want to go, don’t go. It’s all very simple.

Ah, the joy of no longer being obliged to take your kids away on holiday!

Me and her think we're going to dick about in Northumberland August / September - maybe Scotland if it's open - and wait til next summer before we bother heading across the channel again.

You won't be insured against the virus.
If your Mrs thinks using the same serving tongs as every fucker else in the hotel is a good idea then nothing you can say will make sense to her.
You just as well shake hands with every fucker as they enter the restaurant.

Erm, no thanks.

This. That and the flights, airport, face masks, empty/closed everything, risk of getting c19 while away and ending up in hospital, or not allowed to fly? Fuck that. If my missus insisted on going she would definitely be going on her own. Happily no issues there.

Week in a cottage somewhere? Sounds great.

Luckily we have one of those :) Been there for 3 weeks, and won't be back in the city before August at the earliest :)

i suspect that once this has all died down, buffets are going to be very much a thing of the past. like, y'know, paying for stuff with cash, handshakes, single digit unemployment rates, etc.

so at a place like this all buffets will surely already have been replaced by [likely set menu rather than a la carte given the prices & speed of service that they're accustomed to offering] table service, probably with pre-allocated 'servings' to avoid queues.

The idea of getting on a plane for a flight of any length over an hour or so when eating and drinking are so obviously now risk factors rather than Sole Consolation of Travel is enough for me.

The rest, we normally try to avoid the crowds at the best of times but have decided we're probably not going to see a beach outside the UK this year. Gutted TBH.

Hmmm....
With my long experience of dealing with this kind of potential conflict I have found that the best way of heading things off is to make her feel 6that she has made the decision that you want.
You have to be quite subtle, plant a very small seed of doubt and carefully water it over time.

Ibiza? Sounds great. I'm sure the Spanish have got things sorted. I know they had it really bad, but that was months ago. They won't allow any kind of problem to arise. And anyway, the insurance would cover any problems.
Those sunsets in Ibiza are bloody awesome, guaranteed good food and weather.
Love it.

Not just a return to the old Sneez-GardTM dependency?

just been sorting out the final details and payments for our camping trip this morning. the wife's anxiety meant we swapped a site in italy for another in france. eurotunneling, driving and then building your own accommodation out in the open air whilst all the goons are catching up on their pub drinks over here is a wonderful prospect.
increasing doubt, decreasing hope, even my imaginary friend went and changed his mind.

Actually, if we were taking kids this is what we'd do, but substituting a gîte rural for the tenty bit.
