Little bit of cancer prevention advice: avoid the west coast of the USA from, well, now onwards. Check out the gif in this link. Not the first prediction of its kind I've seen for Fukushima, but this is a new spike in strontium levels that seems significant, to say the least.

I might just have to stop eating fish... :pale:

Is that legit or just hysteria?

EDIT: Nope, the bloke who runs it is a total nut job.

It is Turner News, which suggests hysteria. But... scary, if not.

AFAIK the stats and flow projections of this model, and earlier ones, are from reasonable sources. Check out where that's from, there... And that it shows only the first bolus of caesium, and not all that came behind it...or this strontium spike.

So I'll let you decide how you view it as a news story. You won't see it phrased in a horse-scary way though. And I doubt the west coast will be evacuated, but the alternative might well be worse. Thankfully our septic cousins are very forward thinking and never just kick cans down the road.

Some more openness from the Japanese would be good, too.

EDIT to add: I'd view it as something to factor into your exposure estimates, and my seafood point remains.

Ha, shit source alert... Thanks Eric.

The external data is the external data, for all the shittiness of the link source. And there is no shortage of better sources for the same release and flow prediction models... But none i could quickly see with that animated gif!

I'm sure it's all fiiiiiine.

By-the-by, but I was sat on the train yesterday next to some bloke who was proof-reading some utterly unintelligible cancer research paper. There was a big list of names at the top and I was idly wondering whether one might have been you BW. His name was Chris Hee-summat (kept coming up on the Word mark-up). I assumed he was too old to actually be you.

Is it one of them fields where pretty much everyone knows everyone?

No, it's not so small that you know everyone... Mostly those in your area or disease of interest. So if he was working on the same kind of cancer as I had an interest in, then I'd likely have read their stuff or met them/seen them speak. Name doesn't ring a bell, certainly.

Should add I'm not currently working on any malignancy, more basic and applied biology just now. I'm also sadly not so prolific that the odds of being sat next to a co-author are high.

Update with links on the Pennsylvania chimeric antigen receptor T cell stuff mentioned above ^^^

All still very positive, but in its infancy, this stuff. Identifying better marker proteins to kill only the malignant cells is the next step - and trust me, everyone working on a tumour is doing just that.

Also, quick reminder that CRUK and channel 4 have a cancer thing running all weekend: some stuff been aired already, an excellent fly on the wall from UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre last night.

Give if you can.

Florida cancer cluster can't get justice, like all others. Especially when the likely polluter is a defence contractor...

Even Erin Brockovich fucks off and leaves them to it.

“If Al Qaeda sent a team of sleeper cells to poison our groundwater and release toxic materials into the air, people would go nuts. It would be an act of war,” Dycus notes. “But if we do it to ourselves in the name of national security, in preparation for war, that seems to be sort of OK.”

Not particularly clued-up on his diagnosis and how it changed, but if they said (as they did) that it was the rarer operable form, they will have given him a prognosis based on their experience with other patients globally. In other words they should know if there's a risk he's got some cells in a lymph node etc.

So I'm very much hopeful that he's dodged the bullet with typical style :salute:

Five year survival is a big milestone in cancer therapy. If he makes it there, he should be golden.

I was hoping you would say something like that.
Fucking marvellous stuff. When you look at things like that and the chap walking again in Poland(?), the medical and science professions are unbelievable.
