Podcast Thread

Postby Disco Dan » Fri Jan 29, 2010 10:11 pm

In response to suggestions that the tone of the last podcast was a bit depressing, this coming Tuesday will be the special 'happy' podcast.
Take your pick from the following jolly talking points, although I'd really like some esoteric/interesting stuff for Part 3:

Part 1 - White Watching

- CARLISLE (H) IN THE JPT
- SPURS (A) FA CUP
- SWINDON (A)
- COLCHESTER (H)

Part 2 - Talking Points

- Transfer window ins and outs
- Grayson/club's policy of loans over permanent deals
- Bates' statement that he sees a football club as a "property business that trades 25 days a year and is shut the other 340".

Part 3 - Feature

- When have Leeds United made you happy? (It could be a player/game/season/signing/something else completely personal and tenuous)

Part 4 - Coming Up

- TOTTENHAM (H) FA CUP
- HARTLEPOOL (A)
- CARLISLE (A) JPT 2
- LEYTON ORIENT (A) OR BOLTON W (A) FA CUP 5

Just don't do any predictions....they've all been the opposite of what you've said so far!!

C'mon then, we're recording the next one on Tuesday night. Anything to add now the transfer window has shut? Thoughts on Prutton, Huntington, etc?

Reaction now we're back to winning ways?

Thoughts on when LUFC have made you happy? Share a memory...

Prutts farewell note presumably needs discussing?

Sad to see him go, but in all honestly he was so far from the team its probably a good thing. Same goes for Hunts but without the sadness, he never really made an impression.

Good to see us bring in a full back, which presumably allows Hughesy to shore up at RB when fit and also good to see us sign another winger, seen as Gradel seems to only be considered as an impact player. Speaking of which, sure we can all agree its good to see him arrive on a permanent deal - his all round enthusiasm makes it impossible not to like him, regardless of his actual ability level. Kind of like Seb Carole on speed.

Mistake signing Gradel, season long loan better, or not at all if that wasn't an option.
Impact player only on occasions, came on against Colchester for last 10 mins and resembled a clockwork mouse.
McSheffry has a bit of class, and when he settles in, we'll have another Freedman type figure I think

- COLCHESTER (H)

Excellent performance after a shakey opening 20mins. Grayson clearly earned his money in the few days following the Swindon game as there were strong performances all over the pitch and we looked hungry. Even Doyle looked a class above. Don't know whether Kiz was injured, rested, or what but the inclusion of Lubo was an insightful one. He played very well and stifled their long ball game, leaving them completely toothless. McSheffrey had an encouraging debut, as did Lowry. Definitely more to come from those two, McSheffrey especially. Beckford looked very hungry and even weighed in with one or two incisive through balls in the second half, which it something I don't think I've ever seen him do.

Part 2 - Talking Points

- Transfer window ins and outs

Satisfactory. Was hoping we'd see a new midfielder come in on deadline day but Grayson has always seemed very happy with Doyle/Howson/Kilkenny so probably a forlorn hope. For me, McSheffrey is a massive signing for us. Lot of negativity about him on here but he's got class and will add something we desperatly need, e.g. goals and creativity. Interesting that he's been fit all season and simply hasn't been able to get a game, that goes some way to proving that he's not the 'crock' that many of suggesting. Lowry is well thought of at Villa and got good reports while at Plymouth, so he'll do for me. Gradel does seem like something of a Robbo type player, e.g. you'd be happy for him to come off the bench but you'd be a bit worried about starting him. Do we need another Robbo type player when we have Robbo? Maybe not, but I believe Gradel is more versatile and not to mention fucking rapid, and if there's one thing we need more than anything it's pace.

Happy enough to see Huntington, Prutton and Enoch go. All decent lads but nowhere near the team. It's all well and good having a big squad, but we've not even come close to needing any of them so far this season. Pointless having them on the wage bill any longer. Good result keeping Beckford.

- Grayson/club's policy of loans over permanent deals

Happy enough with that. I don't subscribe to the conspiracy theory that Bates absolutely will not spend anything and Grayson is some sort of Oliver Twist charactor holidng his bowl out for any scrap of cash he can get. We're in a shit standard of football, transfer fees barely exist down here. Folk will say we should be using our size and money to blow others out the water when it comes to transfers, I say we already are. There's not many League 1 clubs who could pull in McSheffrey, Vokes, Brombey, Kisnorbo, Lowry, etc. We'll be paying a decent whack for these guys you can be sure.

Part 3 - Feature

- When have Leeds United made you happy? (It could be a player/game/season/signing/something else completely personal and tenuous)

So many for this. Could go on and on about Tranmere away, Carlisle away, Preston away, Champions League days etc but two that stand out most are:

Champions League 3rd qualifying round vs 1860 Munich. Won 2-1 at our place but looked like sitting ducks for the second leg. Nearly a whole team out either injured or suspended against a strong German team. I believe even Gareth Evans played that night. Remember him??

Anyway I was 17 then and my dad decided to take me along with him, a mate, and two of his lads for two nights. My dad's mate organised it on the cheap which saw us on a Ryanair flight to Frankfurt (Haan) airport. Can't be that far from Munich, surely?? Took us the best part of a day to get down there, stuffed into the back of a hired Fiat Punto. Sampled the delights of Munich city centre, including the beer (of course), the sausages, the titty bars and the large Turkish community. Saw at least one altercation when a Turkish resident in a flat above a bar tipped a bowl of water on singing Leeds fans below. Next thing ya know a dozen Leeds fans are stoming up the stairwell looking for the apartment of the perpetrator. Don't know if they found them or not, as my dad took us away from the scene before the climax.

Had some excellent banter with the locals outside the ground, who seemed to be very fond of our anti-Bayern chants and responded with Scum equivolents. Game itself wasn't great, seem to remember Thomas Hassler hitting the bar for them. But then Smith got onto the ball and pinged it into the net to send a small section of the Olympic Stadium into raptures. I distinctly remember being stood next to a couple of German fellas, not sure how they got there and why, but they were joining in with the fun, so I assume they were Bayern or something.

Great 3 days in a great country, punctuated by an amazing Leeds performance.

Other example is Oldham away in the 15 points season. Never have I seen such an abject game between two shite teams. This was the game following Beckford and Kandol's sending off at Gillingham, so we went to Boundary Park with a forward line of Wayne Andrews and Mark De Vries. I'm pretty sure they didn't have a shot between them 4th offficial held up 5 minutes of injury time and we were all just glad the game was nearly over and we'd got a decent point. Then, Wise brings on the appalling Ian Westlake with a minute of injury time already gone, and the rest is history. When his goal went in I'm pretty sure I had a mild heart attack. The whole end just went absolutely ape shit and turned into something a mass orgy, with man love going off everywhere. It's still the only time I've kissed my old man as a grown up! People think I'm a bit odd for putting that above the Carlisle goal that season as my highlight, but there was something about that goal that made it especially special.

There dosent seem to be a general thread for PODCAST discussion?comment?Feedback, and i dont want to be accused of spamming the board again so i'll use this one....

In your indefensible discussion you all seemed to miss the point up until the Pompey game we hadnt actually played a proper back 4 all season i.e. a Right Back, 2 x Centre Backs and a Left back all in there specialised positions... we do it against Pompey and hey presto.... a clean sheet!
