[quote="gazurtoids"]Eh, I've got this far with a less rigorous strategy so far:

1. N. Martyn
2.
3. J. Milburn
4. B. Collins
5. P. Haddock
6. C. Whyte
7. R. Snodgrass
8. J. Giles
9. J. Charles
0. D. Healy
1. T. Currie

Shame on you for picking Cantona over Strachan or McAllister by the way...

Indeed, but going by my method Strachan/Speed/Batty were potentially infringing on Sheridan and McAllister on Martyn. Like I say, it was a rushed job.

I remember Currie made his debut in the match that Giles brought WBA to Leeds so them two could be in the same team

Gah, I clearly meant for Leeds ye tricky bugger.

Not for Leeds? In fact, not all in the same side as far as I can see.

I do have a couple of potential team-breakers listed in the edited version, but not that one.

1966-1970 Gary Sprake
1971-1975 Duncan McKenzie
1976-1980 Tony Currie

1996-2000 Olivier Dacourt

Maybe others could fill the gaps?

Dacourt
Derry
McAllister
Sheridan

Currie
McKenzie
Worthington

It's not so much of a best XI really is it if e.g. Chris Whyte is included - more of an any cunt that can fit in to the rules XI

He was the last name down to be fair, as it became a case of who remained that was eligible.

I was thinking more along the lines of taking Dacourt out and putting Kewell in, but thanks for the support

did those two never play together in charles' second spell? they'd certainly have been in the same squad... sprake had made his debut before charles was signed from juve.

I admit that was a concern for me, in that Charles returned in 1962 and Sprake made his debut as a 16 year old that same year, but thought I'd chance it......

i reckon each player should be given an attacking rating up to 100 and a defensive rating up to 100.

then you draw a picture of each player on a card.

then play match attacks.

or top trumps [for the older gits]

or just have a game of marbles in a grate. that'd be nice.

Bollocks. Get three actors in to play me, tfp, & MW and recreate the whole process blow-by-blow. It'll be the talk of the, er, podosphere...

Bobby Collins 1962-1967
Johnny Giles 1963-1975

Played together in the old second div and won promotion to the first.
£33,000 capture from Man United, Irish International Johnny Giles replaced Ian Lawson and with the £50,000 late acquisition of the immaculate English International Alan Peacock apart, the team largely kept the same formation and personnel. Their colours were lowered only three times, at promotion rivals Manchester City (6th) Sunderland (2nd) and Preston (3rd). Norman Hunter (42) was ever-present, with Gary Sprake, Paul Reaney and inspirational Captain Bobby Collins (41) missing only one game and had strong support from Johnny Giles (40) Billy Bremner (39), Albert Johanneson (37) Don Weston and Willie Bell (35). Injuries restricted Jack Charlton (25) and Jim Storrie (15), which enabled Freddie Goodwin (12) and Ian Lawson (24) to show their value. Alan Peacock showed his worth with 8 goals in 14 games and United were quite happy to pay a further £5,000 to Middlesbrough, as his efforts ensured promotion.Jimmy Greenhoff, Terry Cooper and Paul Madeley were blooded and Peter Lorimer played in the League Cup. Albert Johanneson and Don Weston led the goalscorers with 13 each.

agreed, so [3-1-3-1-2]:

higgs
sterland-charles [john]-gray [mickey]
delph
giles-shez-milner
currie
hasselbaink-yeboah

come to think of it rio never played with milner [who debuted under venables] or hasselbaink, so that's actually a reasonable side:

higgs
sterland-ferdinand-charles-gray
giles-shez-milner
currie
hasselbaink-yeboah

subs: delph, mckenzie, worthington, etc.

i considered dropping gray for a left back of some sort, maybe dennis irwin, that would have meant dropping shez, probably replaced by ian snodin, but shez is clearly the first name on the team sheet...
