i don't think it's a bad idea at all, & [with my paternalistic hat on] think it'd be a good idea to use this, at such point as it ever became ubiquitous [assuming that human drivers were still the norm] to introduce a more nuanced, intelligent approach to speed management, e.g. just talking about motorways, i'm sure that most would agree that in perfect conditions [e.g. dry, good visibility, a quiet, straight road] a strick limit of 70.00mph is unhelpfully restrictive. it's, equally, very much too high if there's snow on the road and/or terrible visibility.

My natural instinct is to hate it. The car I have now has an option for me to set a speed limit (at a value I see fit), I've only tested it once, the end result was most noticeable in acceleration as it insisted on gently arriving at the set maximum. I don't generally speed but when the conditions allow I do like to get to the speed limit as quickly as possible.

Still, seems it can be temporarily overridden or even turned off so I'm not against it. There are certainly a significant number of idiots on the road.

Needs to be understood in the context of climate change too. If the internal combustion engine hasn't ceased to exist in 10 years we're all dead anyway; limiting speed and acceleration in the meantime, if relatively insignificant, is at least the right approach.

I find the boost gauge quite useful in this respect, lately. I'm training myself to get up to speed with getting the turbo over-excited.

Which negates the safety argument nicely.

Next!

It's lunatic eco-warriors like you what gives us Greens a bad name.

I fully acknowledge the green schizo petrolhead thing. When I bought my car I was quite conscious about petrol not diesel and checking the EU emissions class would be compatible with ULEZ in London etc. And I do try to drive carefully most of the time.

But then I get the odd day when I’m ‘Fuck it, foot through the floor, AAAAAAAARRRGH’
