When England pack their side with players from Kent and Surrey such as Denly and Crawley, who achieved little in the County Championship in 2019, why does the media then blame Joe Root for captaining a losing side? Shouldn't the chairman of selectors, Ed Smith, look beyond the M25 for England players, or is he too southern for media criticism? (This isn't an anti-Yorkshire conspiracy post, as our championship batting was woeful in 2019)

England (remember them?) look in danger of winning a Test Match (remember those?).

Yep, they look in command, totally at ease and dominant. Weird innit?

Ironically because Stokes has played a 20:20 innings.
I like it. What is it?

An England opening batsman just carried his bat. This year/decade is already weird.

proper test batting, though an annoying start to their second innings.

I've downgraded it to 'not lose'.

The minute you strayed into the uncharted waters of optimism, I knew we were doomed - but no! Brilliant forecasting.

Hard to account for Ben Stokes, even though he's making this sort of last minute madness commonplace of late.

Hopefully this match will give those clamouring for 4 day test matches something to ponder.

It seems like a sad inevitability that Test Cricket will die off in the not too distant future. It's hard to adjudge whether it's worth trying to extend its lifespan by trialling four day tests. I don't think it'll change owt so might as well keep it as it is.

Exactly. What cricket requires is a selfless visionary interested only in promoting the game itself, such as https://theathletic.com/1515526/?source=twitteruk

Stump mics picked up Jos Buttler have a passionate exchange of ideas with Vern Philander today. It’s lucky he’s flush with IPL money.
