The stats bear this out. He has scored 171 runs in 12 inns at an average of 14.2 batting in the top three compared with 1555 in 49 inns at 37.0 batting at nos 7 &8. Is he a captain’s toady in the dressing room or something?

Quite a remarkable performance by the spinners, claiming every wicket in the match barring one run out in the first innings. Like the home test in India, one thing I will say about Root's captaincy (and Ed Smith's selections to a degree) is it's producing tests that are rollicking good fun, which is all you can ask for really. It'll be interesting to see if they can maintain that momentum going into the series against Pakistan.
