Sad about Jacinda Ardern, and unfortunate that the political right will turn it into some bollocks about women not being up to it.

In my world it would be great if all politicians did the same, 6-8 years should be a limit, then they can get a real job and let someone else take over. I applaud her

Aye. Every level. I’ve come across husband & wife local councillors who’ve been in place 20 years. Complete joke.

Any of our septic brethren concerned about the situation with the US debt ceiling being hit?

The spy balloon thing is kind of fascinating. My assumption is that it’s function is to test the US reaction to it rather than to gather any information. You’d think that two of the fuckers would force Biden’s hand.

Maybe the US has known about these balloons for years and chose now to make a fuss about it?

Seems they have been waiting since Weds to bring it down - and now going to recover it to see what was going on.

In terms of spying to get information, a floating balloon in the sky that everyone can see doesn't seem too stealthy?

Whole thing is bollocks, not spying at all, and only got the reaction it did either cos they're looking for an excuse to flex (standard 🇺🇸 playbook) or were worried of looking weak in the face of the trash media response.

Chinese folks I know get very amused when people they know are smarter than to believe what their govts tell them, go and believe shit like this.

What do you reckon it was doing if it wasn't gathering intelligence?
Meteorology?
Even less likely imo.

As far as I'm aware the balloon exactly matches a pretty basic met device. Will see if i can find what I read the other day.

Look at it this way; they already have good equipment to take pictures on cm scale of anything on US soil from space. This balloon is better than that how exactly, with its lack of directional control and apparent lack of spying equipment? And why would they not bring it down?

The only balloon-related thing I’m willing to get into a shooting war over is whether the English or German version of “99 Luft Balloons” is better.

The whole thing was asinine.

Not politics as such, but the Ohio train crash thing is horrifying.
