i'm sort of struggling to take the governement's side on this dominic cummings story, or maybe i reckon the opposition are just going to look like twats making a big deal about this.

i say this because the new laws that were brought in are 'one size fits all' rules that have been made on the hoof and are inevitably going to have flaws. secondly, like most laws that lack absolute authority (like drinking only after aged 18) they're going to get flouted. people realise these rules fall into that category. (2m makes sense, but should i kick off if someone gets 1.5m from me?)

getting in a car and driving 250 miles (doesn't matter if it was 250 centimeters really) isn't in itself going to spread the virus. a car is a protected bubble.

so, yeah, in his position he's been a bit naughty, but trying to make a big deal of this isn't going to make the british public trust the opposition any more, it'll just raise the political moral maze a bit higher.

You know, I'm sick of following my dreams, man. I'm just going to ask where they're going and hook up with 'em later.

That's true, unless he's done what most of us would have done on a 500 mile round trip, gone in the Services for a cuppa, fuel, piss, etc.

Doing just those basic acts could see some innocent person/s dead in a week or two.

I'm not making a political statement here because I never do. I posted because that person is the most selfish cunt I've read about since Troy (the cunt) Deaney.

There are two aspects:
1) the basic politics - Cummings is Johnson's support, so kick him aside and watch Johnson fall. Why should the opposition do anything other?
2) public trust in the government - as noted in other posts, relatives unable to be with and comfort dying relatives and then unable to attend the funerals, however government advisers can drive around the country whilst telling the rest of us to stay at home. That's more than just a bit naughty

Man, this is bleak.

Tomorrow's NYT Sunday front page. Edit to add: read some.

can't disagree with the points raised above.^^

i was tempted to write, 250 miles doesn't necessarily mean a service stop, but yeah, the bloke's a shit, i know that but you're relying on ifs and buts. i still think the opposition shouldn't blow their load on this.

as to what bobby's said, but kicking him aside (if you actually manage to do this) relies on raising the moral highground to such a level you're going to drown most ordinary people. the bloke's not actually a minister, so isn't subject to the normal rules.

which reminds me of something i read yesterday about how the decent public servants resign when they fuck up the less decent ones just ride the storm

there is absoutely no way he's going to resign from his position (whatever that is) because of this. if he does then i'll be worried because then the tories will be playing the game and you'd have to wonder why.

(the game = pretending you care)

Sorry if this has been posted already. It’s an interesting thread.

I don’t know who this person is or if they have any particular axe to grind but it’s intriguing.

The mental gymnastics being performed on Twitter to justify that he was within the exceptional circumstances exemption to the legislation is great.

Argument
His wife was sick
He was worried he might be
He was worried they might not be able to care for their child if they both got sick
Therefore he drove the family up to Durham to his mum and dads place (not their house)
Legislation allows for care of vulnerable people so he’s done NOTHING wrong

But conveniently the argument ignores
He wasn’t sick.
They had family in London.
Child care is available for key workers.
They didn’t need assistance caring for the child at any point.
They could have had someone come down to care for or pick up the child.
He could have dropped off the child and returned.
Sick people - his wife - should not be leaving the house for any reason.

I also read that it was his mother’s birthday whilst they were up there but that could be bollox and I’m sure it’s irrelevant anyway.
