Well it was an Arab world cup. Are we saying for the next WC the Yanks shouldn't have anything American when the winners lift the trophy? If he was made to wear a banner saying kill the gays then fair enough.
So if England win in '26 and our captain was forced where a Uncle Sam costume while accepting the trophy, or France had been forced to wear a Soviet flag when they won in 2018, you'd have been okay with that?

Its pretty basic for me, such symbols are against FIFA rules, and Messi was forced to wear it in a tournament where other symbols were forbidden. It shouldn't have happened.

I have absolutely no doubt the USA winners will be amend to wear (most likely) a stetson - as they do at USGPs.

Also, see this, from another place:
The garment is called a 'bisht' and it is an outer garment worn in predominantly Arab countries. The name is derived from the Akkadian word bishtu which means 'nobility' or 'prestige'

This garment is considered a symbol of great honour. It's a status symbol amongst royalty, the wealthy and those with high social rank, much like a cross between ceremonial graduation robes or, in Western terms, wearing a black tuxedo at a special occasion.

When it's the Emir of a country literally gifting you the bisht, putting it on you with his own hands, it's the highest honour that can be bestowed upon that civilian.

It has nothing to do with religion at all.

Messi may not have understood what it meant when he graciously wore it, but it was the Qatari way of recognising him for the GOAT that he is.
So yeah: inappropriate, poorly timed, and against FIFA rules (but when did they matter?), but not, of itself, offensive. Quite the reverse, and unlikely IMO an attempt to ensure 'Arabic symbolism' was the primary motive, otherwise the Emir - and Infantino - would've gatecrashed the trophy lift photo, no?
I like it. What is it?

Seems pretty fucking simple to me. The WC is a global competition and the job of the hosts is welcome the values of the participants, without seeking to impose their values on them. Mark of respect or not, that hasn’t happened before and it should not happen again.

Argentina are still a hard team to like
You think? I like them a lot better after that final
No cheating, whining or time wasting. Their attitude impressed from start to finish. Well worth their win.
Absolutely.
Im currently in Colombia visiting the in-laws, interesting to see the Colombians supporting the French. Made the victory even sweeter as I was the only guy in the bar celebrating :D

Yeah there's a lot to be concerned about in Qatar but this is just them saying congrats isn't it?
There's more in it than that. It's them making sure the lasting iconic imagery is unmistakably Arab.

That's why I said in isolation I see it as innocent. I only associate it as a problem because I fundamentally disagree with a number of their laws/principles.

C'mon Jackos. We won't make you wear an Uncle Sam costume. It'll be a MAGA trucker cap and an unironic "America Fuck Yeah!" T-shirt with a soaring eagle on it. Get it right!

The quote and picture lack context. According to "The Quality of Madness" by Tim Rich, Bielsa said these and other words to his Marseille players after they had drawn at home to league leaders Lyon with 9 games of the season left to play, in a match in which Marseille had a player sent off despite playing the ball and apparently scored a goal that the ref decided hadn't crossed the line. Nothing to do with Argentina or Messi.

i knew it was an old quote, it was familiar, but impressive knowledge. the thing is i'm forgetting so many of His little wisdoms. we need some sort of bielsa bible, a little book of his quotes. he managed to tie football behaviour to general impulses that we all feel majestically. i still miss him.

but unlike a lot of you cunts i can see the value in marsch.
increasing doubt, decreasing hope, even my imaginary friend went and changed his mind.

Good to see that Mateu Lahoz, the ref who tried to ruin the Argentina v Holland Game in the WC hasn't lost his grip and managed to issue 16 yellow cards and two red in today's Barcelona v Espanyol match.
