I tell you what, russ abbot was actually a really good comic/musical/general actor - i once saw him play Fagin in a decent version of Oliver!, the guy was superb, nailed the role. I on balance like him.

i think he only started to come unstuck when he moved out of his own comfort zone/when his ego started writing cheques that his skillset couldn't cash, e.g.: (a) writing his own comedy, by superprimetime standards his mid 80s stuff was execrable really; and (b) releasing pre-recorded music, the guy's musical chops were nowhere near up to writing or performing material that'd stand alone outside of a comedy performance.

Also, fair to say that the 'loaf shifted rather more units than Russ ever did.

The reason I don't frequent the music thread is that my taste in music is much too simple for most ballers. I like music that makes me feel happy, Bat Out of Hell is like a living breathing thing. It makes me feel alive, and works when I'm happy and sad. Did the sane for my Mum back in '77 when she was a 32 year old widow, with five young kids, living on a council estate. Its happy music.

ha, yeah, i mean, what you're saying resonates with me a little, a couple of years later than that my mother similarly overplayed her copy of Queen's greatest hits album, the one with the black sleeve that's mostly 70s stuff. i definitely have a soft spot for it on similar grounds. but i still don't like meatloaf. like queen it's overblown and silly but in such an american, and therefore unironic, way?

i agree that it's hugely ambigous, rank bad writing. my 8 yr old daughter's currently home schooling/convalescing with covid, yesterday she had an exercise on avoiding repeated noun phrases, & using pronouns instead - but if you take things too far, use just the pronoun too often, it becomes easy to forget what they're referring to. i almost wonder whether the exercise jinxed poor old 'Loaf.

Just had this pointed out to me by son as we walked the dog. Yeah, I know the song tells you the answer, but at the time of release it was a thing that people speculated about - asking each other what they wouldn't do for love on radio phone-ins etc etc. I'd say it helped rather than hindered.
He was getting asked about it in interviews years later.

I can’t stomach Jim Steinman, who is the songwriting muse behind Meatloaf.

Even on my best day, even if I try to accept his uber-bombast as enjoyable camp, I can’t get there. It’s too much and the lyrical gymnastics he imposes to get to the camp are just cringe-worthy.

The only Steinman song I can really enjoy, and it’s definitely on a camp level, is “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” by Bonnie Tyler, and I guarantee it’s because of the memories of the off-the-chain video that admirably out-bombasted Steinman and successfully crossed into that holy realm of so-bad-it’s-good.
