I tell you what, russ abbot was actually a really good comic/musical/general actor - i once saw him play Fagin in a decent version of Oliver!, the guy was superb, nailed the role. I on balance like him.
i think he only started to come unstuck when he moved out of his own comfort zone/when his ego started writing cheques that his skillset couldn't cash, e.g.: (a) writing his own comedy, by superprimetime standards his mid 80s stuff was execrable really; and (b) releasing pre-recorded music, the guy's musical chops were nowhere near up to writing or performing material that'd stand alone outside of a comedy performance.
Also, fair to say that the 'loaf shifted rather more units than Russ ever did.
