Could be worse - could be ‘0 Macron’ as a measure of the chance of getting a decent kit.

I like that The Omicron Variant is the perfect name for a 1970s movie about the end of the world. Dustin Hoffman is the lone journalist who first investigates the rumours from the secret lab

Moderna making all the right noises about turnaround time for a variant-targeting mRNA vaccine: they reckon 100 days if it's needed. Their tech is very amenable to sequence variant tracking and they certainly seem to me to have been thinking hard of how to prepare for it when needed, scale up etc

Reports coming out that the plane from SA to Schiphol that got quarantined while in the air is reporting about 10% of the passengers as testing positive for COVID. No word yet on which variant.

Suppose the good thing we’ll all be well versed on the Greek alphabet when all this is over. Wonder where they go after we reach Omega?

It immediately made me think of this Michael Crichton classic:

It does sound from SA medic voices like vaccination will offer some protection to the o variant. They're describing the same ICU prevalence of the unvaxxed or part vaxxed.

Edit: example

Masks, PCR tests and Omicron in the UK.

Bang goes the event industry, again.

I guess that fucks my Christmas plans as well? Due to arrive 22/12 staying in a hotel in Central Leeds, we can't spend Christmas stuck in a hotel room?

Says you need to isolate until you get your negative test back. If you can get one of those on site tests at the airport you’d hope you’ll be sprung by the following lunchtime

That’s a pisser.

It is a Day 2 test, but as I understand it that means no later than the end of the second day after you arrive - so you can test straight away it the option is available. Someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

Below is the current advice, presumably the difference now is it’ll have to be a PCR test

If you are fully vaccinated
This is what you need to do if you qualify under the fully vaccinated rules for travel to England.

Before you travel to England – fully vaccinated
Before you travel to England you must:

book and pay for a COVID-19 test – to be taken before the end of day 2 in England
complete a passenger locator form – to be completed in the 48 hours before you arrive in England
You can choose a lateral flow test or a PCR test. You cannot use an NHS test for this. You must use a private test provider.

You will need to enter your COVID-19 test booking reference number on your passenger locator form.

If you will be in England for less than 2 days you still need to book and pay for a day 2 COVID-19 test.

When you arrive in England – fully vaccinated
After you arrive in England you must take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2. The day you arrive is day 0.

This is the lateral flow or PCR test that you booked before travel.

If the test result is negative, you do not need to self-isolate.

Yep, we tested at St Pancras as soon as we got off the Eurostar the other month and got the result next day.

Useful, informative and considered thread on o.

Remember also the antibodies are only part of our immunity, we also have the cell mediated aspects which will recognise different bits and may be harder to evade.

Promising development if this holds up.

For this reason, the supporter is the best thing in football." - Marcelo Bielsa
